How to Test Microphone on Chromebook

Test the microphone on a Chromebook, including USB and Bluetooth headsets, without installing anything.

The short answer

ChromeOS keeps microphone control in the quick settings shelf and in the browser's site permissions. Both must allow access before a page can hear you.

How to Test Microphone on Chromebook: step by step

  1. Open the audio settings

Click the clock, then the arrow beside the volume slider. ChromeOS lists inputs and outputs with a live level indicator.

  2. Select the right input

Under Input, choose your microphone. Built-in, USB and Bluetooth devices all appear in the same list.

  3. Start the test above

Allow microphone access when the browser asks. Watch the meter respond as you speak.

  4. Check site permission

The icon at the left of the address bar shows whether this site is allowed. Reset it if the prompt never appeared.

  5. Record and play back

The Record panel captures a sample you can hear. This is the fastest way to judge the built-in mic against a headset.

Chromebook microphone fixes

  • Android apps cannot hear youAndroid apps on ChromeOS hold separate permissions. Check them in Settings, Apps, then the app's permissions page.
  • Mic muted in quick settingsChromeOS has its own input mute. Open the audio panel from the clock and confirm the input is not muted there.
  • USB headset not detectedTry the other USB-C port and avoid unpowered hubs. Some docks do not pass audio devices through reliably.
  • Bluetooth mic quality is poorChromeOS switches to a narrowband profile when the mic is in use. Wired or USB headsets avoid it.

ChromeOS keeps two permission layers

A Chromebook can block a microphone in two places: at the system level through the audio panel in quick settings, and at the site level inside the browser. Both look the same from a web page, which just receives silence.

Checking the quick settings panel first saves time, because it also shows the live input meter. If that meter moves and the browser still hears nothing, the block is at site level and one click on the address-bar icon fixes it.

Privacy: every measurement on this page happens inside your browser. No audio is uploaded, and recordings exist only in the tab until you download them or close it.

Questions people ask

Where are ChromeOS sound settings?

Click the clock, then the arrow next to the volume slider. Full options live in Settings, Device, Audio.

Does a Chromebook need drivers?

No. ChromeOS handles all standard audio devices itself and updates them with the system.

Can I record on a Chromebook?

Yes. The Record panel above works, as do the built-in Recorder app and Android recording apps.

Why is the built-in mic quiet?

It is designed for meetings at arm's length with software processing. A headset improves it immediately.
