Microphone Test iPhone

Test all three iPhone microphones and find out which one is blocked, dirty or failing.

The short answer

iPhones have three microphones — bottom, front and rear. Safari can only reach the one currently in use, so test in the browser first, then use Voice Memos and the Camera app to check the other two.

Microphone Test iPhone: the full method

  1. Test in Safari first

Press Start test above. Safari asks for permission the first time. This checks the microphone iOS gives to web apps and browser calls.

  2. Allow access if nothing happens

Settings, Safari, Microphone. Set it to Ask or Allow. Then reload this page and start the test again.

  3. Test the bottom microphone

Open Voice Memos and record a few seconds while holding the phone normally. This uses the bottom mic beside the charging port.

  4. Test the front microphone

Record a short video with the front camera and play it back. That uses the microphone near the earpiece.

  5. Test the rear microphone

Record with the rear camera. Muffled audio here, with the other two clear, points at debris in the rear mic opening.

  6. Check for case interference

Remove the case and repeat any test that sounded muffled. Thick cases and screen protectors block microphone ports regularly.

iPhone microphone fixes

  • Muffled on calls onlyLint in the bottom microphone port. Clean gently with a dry soft brush. Never insert metal or use compressed air.
  • Nobody can hear you at allDisconnect Bluetooth. iOS may be routing audio to a car kit or an earbud left in another room.
  • Works in Voice Memos, not in an appSettings, Privacy and Security, Microphone. Each app needs its own permission and updates can reset them.
  • Very quiet after a screen repairThird-party repairs frequently leave the microphone gasket misaligned. Compare all three mics to identify which one changed.
  • Crackling during callsTry Airplane mode on and off to reset the radio, then restart. Persistent crackling on one mic only suggests hardware.

Three microphones, three failure modes

Because an iPhone uses several microphones for different jobs, a fault often appears in one app and not another. Callers say you sound distant while your voice memos are perfect, or a video sounds fine from the front camera and muffled from the rear.

Testing each microphone separately turns a vague complaint into a specific one. If only the bottom mic is affected, the cause is likely debris or a repair issue at the base of the phone. If all three are affected, the cause is more likely software: a stuck Bluetooth route, a permission, or an active Voice Isolation mode.

Privacy: every measurement on this page happens inside your browser. No audio is uploaded, and recordings exist only in the tab until you download them or close it.

Frequently asked

Will resetting settings help?

Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, Reset All Settings clears audio routing quirks without deleting data. Try it before booking a repair.

How many microphones does an iPhone have?

Modern models have at least three: bottom, front near the earpiece, and rear beside the cameras. They are used together for noise cancelling and video.

Can Safari access all of them?

No. iOS selects the appropriate microphone itself. That is why testing in Voice Memos and the Camera app is necessary for a full check.

Does a screen protector affect the microphone?

It can, if it covers the earpiece slot. Check the cutouts if the front mic sounds muffled.
