To test a mic on an iPhone, open this page in Safari and press Start test. If Safari shows no prompt, check Settings, Safari, Microphone and set it to Ask or Allow.
Test Mic on iPhone: step by step
- Test in Safari first
Press Start test above. Safari asks for permission the first time. This checks the microphone iOS gives to web apps and browser calls.
- Allow access if nothing happens
Settings, Safari, Microphone. Set it to Ask or Allow. Then reload this page and start the test again.
- Test the bottom microphone
Open Voice Memos and record a few seconds while holding the phone normally. This uses the bottom mic beside the charging port.
- Test the front microphone
Record a short video with the front camera and play it back. That uses the microphone near the earpiece.
- Test the rear microphone
Record with the rear camera. Muffled audio here, with the other two clear, points at debris in the rear mic opening.
- Check for case interference
Remove the case and repeat any test that sounded muffled. Thick cases and screen protectors block microphone ports regularly.
iPhone microphone fixes
- Crackling during callsTry Airplane mode on and off to reset the radio, then restart. Persistent crackling on one mic only suggests hardware.
- Voice Isolation is cutting you offOpen Control Centre during a call, tap Mic Mode, and choose Standard instead of Voice Isolation.
- Nobody can hear you at allDisconnect Bluetooth. iOS may be routing audio to a car kit or an earbud left in another room.
- Works in Voice Memos, not in an appSettings, Privacy and Security, Microphone. Each app needs its own permission and updates can reset them.
- Very quiet after a screen repairThird-party repairs frequently leave the microphone gasket misaligned. Compare all three mics to identify which one changed.
Why iPhone audio changes between apps
iOS applies different processing depending on what the audio is for. A phone call, a FaceTime call, a Voice Memo and a browser recording each receive a different combination of noise suppression, beamforming and gain, all chosen by the system rather than the app.
This is why comparing apps is the fastest diagnostic on an iPhone. Consistent quality across Voice Memos, the Camera app and the browser points to hardware. Good quality in one and poor quality in another points at that app's permission, its own settings, or the microphone mode selected in Control Centre.
Questions people ask
How many microphones does an iPhone have?
Modern models have at least three: bottom, front near the earpiece, and rear beside the cameras. They are used together for noise cancelling and video.
Can Safari access all of them?
No. iOS selects the appropriate microphone itself. That is why testing in Voice Memos and the Camera app is necessary for a full check.
Why does my voice sound different in the browser?
iOS applies its own processing per app. Browser audio uses different settings from the Phone app.
Does a screen protector affect the microphone?
It can, if it covers the earpiece slot. Check the cutouts if the front mic sounds muffled.
