Onn Microphone

Test a budget USB or 3.5 mm microphone and find out whether it is faulty or simply set up wrong.

The short answer

Onn microphones from Walmart are plug-and-play USB or 3.5 mm devices with no custom driver. If yours is quiet or silent, the cause is almost always input selection, the mute switch, or the gain dial.

Onn Microphone — how to do it

  1. Connect it directly

Use a port on the computer itself rather than a hub or a monitor. Bus-powered microphones are sensitive to weak ports.

  2. Select it in the dropdown

It should appear by name. If the list shows only your built-in microphone, the operating system has not recognised the device.

  3. Check the physical controls

Budget microphones typically have a mute button and a gain dial. A muted device produces a completely flat meter.

  4. Start the test and speak

Speak 15 to 20 cm away. If levels are very low, raise the gain dial before touching any software setting.

  5. Watch for clipping

Cheap capsules overload easily. If the clip counter rises, back the gain dial down rather than moving away.

  6. Record and listen

Playback tells you whether the microphone is genuinely poor or simply badly positioned.

Budget microphone problems

  • Very quietThe gain dial is low, or a 3.5 mm plug is in the headphone socket rather than the microphone socket.
  • Picks up everything in the roomMost budget mics are omnidirectional. Getting closer is the only effective control.
  • Crackles when movedA failing solder joint or cable, common in the price bracket. Test on another machine before returning it.
  • Works, but the OS ignores itSet it explicitly as the default input rather than relying on automatic selection.
  • Not detected at allTry another port and another cable. Micro-USB and USB-C cables intended for charging often carry no data lines.

Cheap microphones fail in predictable ways

An inexpensive microphone is not a worse microphone in every dimension. Its capsule is usually acceptable for speech; what is compromised is the preamplifier, which adds hiss, and the polar pattern, which is omnidirectional and therefore hears the whole room.

Both weaknesses respond to the same fix: get closer. At 15 cm rather than 60 cm, your voice arrives roughly 12 dB louder while the hiss and the room stay exactly where they were. That single change usually accounts for the entire gap between a budget microphone and an expensive one for speech.

Common questions

Do budget USB microphones need drivers?

No. They use the standard USB audio class that every modern operating system supports.

Are they good enough for meetings?

Yes, comfortably. They outperform any laptop array simply because they sit closer to you.

Why does mine sound worse than reviews suggest?

Reviews are recorded in treated rooms at close range. Distance and room are usually the difference, not the microphone.

Should I use the included stand?

Small desk stands transmit keyboard vibration. A cheap foam pad or boom arm improves the result noticeably.
