How to Test Microphone Mac

Test the microphone on a MacBook, iMac or Mac mini, and clear the permission settings that block browsers.

The short answer

On a Mac, the built-in check is System Settings, Sound, Input, where a level meter moves as you speak. The tester above adds waveform, spectrum, recording and a device report.

How to Test Microphone Mac: the full method

  1. Grant permission first

System Settings, Privacy and Security, Microphone. Your browser must be listed and switched on, otherwise the page hears nothing at all.

  2. Press Start test and speak

The meter should respond immediately. MacBook microphone arrays are sensitive, so expect healthy levels even at arm's length.

  3. Cross-check in Sound settings

System Settings, Sound, Input. The input level meter moves as you speak and lets you set the input volume.

  4. Try QuickTime Player

File, New Audio Recording captures a sample with the same input. If QuickTime works and the browser does not, it is a permission issue.

  5. Check Ambient Noise Reduction

In Sound, Input, macOS offers noise reduction on some models. Turn it off if your voice sounds gated or processed.

  6. Record and listen

Use the Record panel above to capture a sentence and play it back through the same Mac.

Mac microphone fixes

  • Input level slider at zeroSystem Settings, Sound, Input. The slider resets after some updates and produces a completely silent microphone.
  • Sounds thin on BluetoothUsing an AirPods microphone forces a lower-quality profile. For recording, use the Mac's own microphone and listen on AirPods.
  • Nothing works after an updateReset the audio daemon by running sudo killall coreaudiod in Terminal, then retest. macOS restarts the service automatically.
  • Browser has no permissionmacOS requires per-app microphone permission and browsers are treated as one app. After enabling it, quit and reopen the browser completely.

What macOS does to your voice before an app hears it

Recent macOS versions apply their own processing to microphone input, including ambient noise reduction and, during calls, Voice Isolation. Both are useful in a noisy room and both remove detail, which is why a Mac microphone can sound clean on a call and disappointingly processed in a recording.

Ambient noise reduction is toggled in System Settings under Sound, Input, on the models that offer it. Voice Isolation is switched per call from Control Centre. Turning both off before recording anything you intend to publish gives you the raw signal, which is always the better starting point.

Privacy: every measurement on this page happens inside your browser. No audio is uploaded, and recordings exist only in the tab until you download them or close it.
